Marine autopilots are self-steering devices that maintain heading on a chosen course. Essential for all long passages, they can also enhance boating locally by acting like a second pair of hands. The right autopilot systems can keep the boat on a preferred course even in bad weather conditions. The result is that everyone onboard enjoys a comfortable ride while heading error, course deviation, rudder movement and power consumption are minimized. Although they still rely on initial calibration and set-up to work well, modern marine autopilots constantly collect data to maintain the safest course. This built-in intelligence enables them to learn how any given sea state, wind, vessel speed, loading and engine setting is affecting the boat.
We install and configure autopilots for mechanical and hydraulic steering systems. We offer units that may or may not require physical rudder feedback. Linear: The most common type on sailboats which moves the rudder directly from the tiller arm or rudder using electricity. Rotary: Used on chain and cable steering (wheeled) systems that may use sprockets ranging from 13 to 25 teeth. Hydraulic: For boats with hydraulic steering systems.
Installation includes consultation, measuring and ordering a unit that will best suit the boat. Also included is testing for magnetic interference, wiring, configuration, mounting faceplates, connecting GPS, connecting NMEA bus, filling and bleeding the steering system, sea trial and calibration.
